Discuss Eldorado

I was having a decent time watching this movie until suddenly a dog gets randomly thrown over a bridge, smashes into a car and lies painfully dying for 10 minutes while every character treats it like no big deal.

I had to know why the director would throw such a bizarre wrench at us, so I found a director interview where he briefly talks about it. Aside from his gimmick being that there has to be a dog in all of his films, and this time he decided on a dead dog, he says the scene was mostly just for the sake of showing the conflict in one character (the character says leave the dog to die, but then we're supposed to feel pity for the guy when we learn he lost his own dog). I gotta say, the director failed at that goal. That scene made me feel disgust for every character in the film.
