Discuss There's Always a Woman

"No picture could ever come between us."

"Vivacious Sally Reardon (Joan Blondell) takes over her husband Bill's (Melvyn Douglas) private detective agency when he decides to go back working as a special investigator for the district attorney."

"Her first client is socialite Lola Fraser (Mary Astor) who hires Sally to find out if her husband Walter (Lester Matthews) is cheating on her with his ex-fiancée Anne Calhoun (Frances Drake)."

"Sally goes to the Skyline Club with Bill to have a good look at Anne, who is there having dinner with her fiancé Jerry Marlowe (Robert Paige), Lola and Walter."

"Well, why didn't you pick me up, you big lummox?"

"I picked you up once and now look at me."

"The next day Walter turns up dead and Sally suspects Marlowe, who she overheard threathening Walter at the Skyline Club the night before. She tells this to the New York Dispatch reporter to get some publicity for the detective agency."

"I'm engaged to Anne now, and I'll kill the first man that horns in."

"When Marlowe sees the accusation in the newspaper, he hires Sally to investigate the case and get him off the suspect list."

"Bill is mad at Sally for talking to the reporter and having an embarrassing picture of him taken without his pants on. He tells her to stay out of the case, as he is investigating it for the district attorney. She promises not to butt in again, but of course she doesn't really mean it." grinning

"I always tell the truth when I'm... when I've had a few drinks."

"If you do, it's the only time."

"So Sally continues searching for clues to exonerate Marlowe and find the real murderer."

Who did it?

. The butler?

"Oh, I think that's a very nice attitude, Bill, but don't forget to question the butler."

"What butler?"

"I don't know. All I know is that when I read a detective story there's always a butler."

"So you never shot a gun before?"

"No, sir."

"But you knew enough to release the safety catch before you pulled the trigger."

. Shane, the night club owner?

"Shane? Nonsense. As it happens, I was talking to Shane over the telephone just about the time the murder was committed. What do you think he was doing, holding a revolver in one hand, and a receiver in the other?"

"Maybe he's a ventriloquist."

. Anne?

"I'll tell you what I do believe. I believe that you wrote Fraser a blackmailing letter. And when he wouldn't be blackmailed, you killed him."

. Lola?

"If anybody did it was Lola. She was jealous. She..."

"You haven't by any chance found an answer to that question, have you?"

"What question?"

"How a smart guy like me happened to marry a dumb cluck like you?"

"I don't think there is any explanation."

"That's what I thought."

"I quite enjoyed this screwball comedy, especially the witty one-liners between Sally and Bill in this simple murder mystery, which makes for a riveting watch any time one thinks of murder or getting a divorce lawyer." wink

"Oh, that's not fair, Bill."

"All's fair in love and war."

"Well, this is war in a way, isn't it?"

"I guess it must be love too, otherwise I'd have killed you long ago. So long, dangerous."

"Puree mongole?"

"No, my name is Reardon."

"As long as I'm paying 90 cents for that puree mongole, I'd like to see you eat some of it."
