With a title like The Last Days of Disco, you'd think this comedy might be a silly romp full of all the cringeworthy clichés that come with the word disco. It's not, it's surprisingly sober, intellectual and kinda dark, and that may feel like a letdown at first. But wow, if you're paying attention you'll get it by the end of the movie.
Loosely based on the fall of NYC's epic Studio 54, the defining club of 70s-80s urban nightlife, this movie gives us a snapshot of what social life was like for post college 20-somethings, oddly not too different from the way it is now, or the way any 20-something generation had it... with the huge difference that the disco era came to a sudden, ugly end. Hats off to Whit Stillman for being the 1st & only filmmaker to give that generation some respect.
LOVE Josh's speech at the end (no spoilers)
