Discuss The Beyond

That scene with the lady in the morgue was so goddamn stupid I almost threw my shoe through the screen. Girl out in the hall hears a lady scream. Girls go in the room and the lady is on the floor presumably fainted or passed out. A jar of acid magically is tilted over exactly where it spills on her and she sleeps through the whole thing. Fulci really expects his audience to have double digit I.Q.s to pull these lazy scenes on them. I gave this film a 3 outta 10 stars when I watched it about 7 years ago and now I see why.

The ending of this film is the only good thing about it.

If I remember correctly, all of the films in the Dead trilogy have similar endings. Not that they all have the people end up in hell like this one but just as gloomy. One thing these films do get right is the music. Its really creepy. It's too bad the writing, directing and acting is atrocious.

You're right about the music in Fulci movies. I particularly liked the score for Zombie, his greatest movie IMO.

Is that the one that starts in NY and ends up on a Caribbean island? If so, then you are right. That one has the most cohesive story out of all of them. The only reason I am questioning is because these Fulci films seem to always mix up names and cast credits when they get presented to foreign markets. Like I am pretty sure I have seen that film also referred to as Zombi 2 or some shit like that.

I loved the music in most Fulci movies, but the music in THE BEYOND I find too bombastic and repetitive. It conveys an epic scale with all the singing and chanting where I think a lower key Tangerine Dream / Jay Chattaway style score would have fit it much better. Much of the score was recycled for the TV movie "Scorpion with Two Tails" (1982), which also stole music from ZOMBIE and GATES OF HELL. Actually even this movie steals a little ZOMBI music when they all walk down the staircase into hell.

I have said it many times, but I believe that between Fulci's big 4 horror movies (including HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY) that there's about 50 minutes of great film in there and about 300 minutes of crap.

I did have dinner with a group of people once (in 2009) which included Richard Johnson (in Newark, New Jersey) and Ian McCulloch who both acted in ZOMBIE. Though both were esteemed British stage performers, they were both very proud of their work on these films (I would have assumed that they would consider these films as embarrassing nonsense). I don't think both watched each movie too often but both claimed that the films were a lot of fun to work on. I wish I remembered more but there was a lot of wine involved.

Well, I don't consider the acting in these films the worse offence by any stretch. It's the writing and directing that are really bad. Most of the bad acting is done by 3rd string supporting characters. Most of the main characters do a decent enough of an acting job.

In Italy it's called Zombi 2 (Dawn of the Dead was called Zombi in that country and this film was pretending to be a sequel! Copyright be damned 😀)

In America it's called Zombie.

Here in the UK it's called Zombie Flesh Eaters

OMG, that totally makes sense now! LOL. Man, DotD musta made a huge splash over there for them to try and rip it off so blatantly. I actually really do like that film as it is probably Romero's best although Night of the Living Dead is pretty damn good too.
