... it was a disappointing last 30mins where events spiralled into the absurd.

• being beaten up by thugs but allowed to keep his false passport to continue travelling
• the coincidentally timed raid by gunmen on horseback for a bit of drama
• the agreement by the pilot to take a detour and drop Justin off at an isolated lake with no provisions or shelter
• his decision to hand himself over to armed thugs who he knew might torture him and cut off his manhood

Was the ending at all faithful to the book? It had all the hallmarks of a film lovingly adapting great source material but being forced by a studio to shoehorn in a bit of gratuitous action and tension to generate some some box office in promotional material. It near ruined the whole film.

Such a shame as, barring a couple of heavy handed moments (e.g. Justin feeling the need to repeat out loud about the "marriage of convenience"), this had the potential to be something pretty special in 21st Century film.
