Sidney Lumet was never among the more subtle of filmmakers but he really outdid himself here with the heavy-handed, intrusive direction. Thank goodness for Rod Steiger and his powerful, layered performance. He is the reason The Pawnbroker manages to hold the attention, for all the irritating supporting stereotypes running around him. 6/10

I couldn't agree with you more about this. The stereotypes are heavy-handed. The acting is, at times, heavy-handed. Hell, flashbacks in this film are heavy-handed. I really didn't care for it at all.
