本片透过少女阿格拉娅的视角，为我们展示了时代变迁中一段非比寻常的母女关系，以及一个家庭的分崩离析。故事由真实事件改编，罗马尼亚齐奥塞斯库独裁统治时期，一个马戏表演家庭逃往西欧，为了在业界立足，母亲倾其所有习得一项危险的舶来技艺——悬发术，从此少女每晚都在失去母亲的恐惧中度过。然而，终有一天，少女将承袭家庭传统，成为那位“拥有钢铁般强韧秀发的女士”。

This film is about the relationship of a mother and her daughter, the split-up of their family, the blessing and curse of belonging together and about coming of age - all this from the perspective of the young girl Aglaja. The story is based on real-life events, an Eastern European circus artist family that fled to the West. If they want to stay in the circus business they have to make up an exotic act. The mother spends all their money to buy a very dangerous act: hanging by her hair high up in the dome of the circus while juggling with burning torches. Every night Aglaja is terrified by the fear of losing her mother. But, on some day, she has to follow the family tradition and become the "Woman with the Hair of Steel".

A magyar-román cirkuszi mutatványos család a jobb élet reményében nyugatra menekül Ceausescu Romániájából a múlt század nyolcvanas éveinek elején. Ha porondon akarnak maradni, egy különleges mutatvánnyal kell kirukkolniuk. A mama, Sabina kidolgozza a mutatványt, melyben a saját haján lóg a kupolában, miközben égő fáklyákkal zsonglőrködik. A kislánya, Aglaja minden este attól retteg, hogy a mamáját baleset éri. Ez a rettegés átszövi egész életét, pedig egyszer majd ő lép a helyébe.

În speranța unei vieţi mai bune, o familie româno-maghiară de circari fuge de regimul ceauşist şi emigrează în vest, la începutul anilor '80. Odată ajunşi, ca să poată rămâne în branşă, sunt nevoiți să găsească ceva exotic cu care să impresioneze: mama are un număr special, stă atârnată de păr de cupola circului. Fiica Aglaja este extrem de îngrijorată că mama ei ar putea să moară executând numărul, iar această temere devine o grijă zilnică. În pofida temerilor, urmând tradiţia familiei, ea însăşi va deveni "Femeia cu părul de oţel".
