A group of rich young intellectuals hiding from the war in rural Italy play at being partisans when some disbanded soldiers and some refugees ask them for shelter in their villa. The young and aristocratic Andrea strikes up a friendship with a peasant girl, Lucia. Then the Germans suddenly appear, looking for the real partisans, and the time comes for serious decisions.

En 1943, la comtesse Luisa, son fils Andrea, son neveu Carlo, fils d'un dirigeant fasciste et Ferrucio, un ami de la famille, quittent Milan pour la campagne et ainsi échapper aux bombardements. Contre l'avis de sa mère, Andrea accepte d'héberger des sans-abris, dont la jeune ouvrière Lucia...

Nel 1943 la contessa Luisa, suo figlio Andrea, Carlo, cugino di Andrea e figlio di un gerarca fascista e Ferruccio, un amico di famiglia, si trovano in una villa non lontano da Milano per sfuggire ai bombardamenti. I giovani cercano di far trascorrere il tempo nel miglior modo possibile. Dei tre solo Carlo si rende conto del travaglio sociale del momento. L'arrivo di un operaia sfollata e di un gruppo di soldati sbandati strappano Andrea dalla sua incosciente spensieratezza.

Осень 1943-го года. Девятнадцатилетний Андреа вместе с матерью, графиней Луизой, пережидают смутные военные времена на загородной вилле близ Милана. В городок, расположенный рядом с их поместьем, приезжают эвакуированные с Сицилии, где идут активные боевые действия. Андреа заводит, как ему кажется, легкую интрижку с одной из переселенок. Но постепенно оказывается, что его чувства к Лючие намного серьезней. Но этим чувствам еще предстоит пройти испытания на прочность, когда из эшелона с военнопленными, захваченными оккупировавшими Италию немецкими войсками, сбегают несколько человек, и с помощью Лючии находят убежище на вилле Андреа.

Ambientada en la II Guerra Mundial, drama sobre la resistencia italiana, con muchos de sus personajes característicos. El protagonista es un burgués despreocupado que se enamora de una partisana italiana. La mayor parte del film trata sobre el choque cultural entre la clase alta fascista y la resistencia.
