There's much to love about this wonderful family film, but I think the part of the movie that's most deeply touching and affecting is when the sweet, gentle elderly couple so sensitively and lovingly take Lassie in for a while. What beautiful people they are.
It's been multiple years since I last watched this film, though I remember that part being what especially "got" me.

I must confess that I am not a big fan of this film. I love dogs, and am often a sucker for animal movies, but even as such things go, this came across as rather twee. The sequence to which you refer is certainly the best and most moving in the movie, however.
