Discuss Lady Behave!

It is Mardi Gras in New Orleans and party girl Clarice goes out with some friends. Her motherly sister Paula declines the invitation to go along and for once have some fun. She tells one of her friends to make sure that Clarice is back by two, because they're sailing in the morning.

It's well past eight in the morning when Clarice finally comes home drunk, laughing and kissing McMasters.

Paula shows him the door, sits Clarice down on the couch and asks her to tell her where she's been all night.

Clarice tells Paula that they all went out for supper and dancing, they all got married and then they all went for breakfast. Paula interrupts her, saying that she's already married, six months ago in New York, to Michael Dimitri Andrews.

Now Clarice got married again to, not McMasters, but to some millionaire.

Paula calls their godfather Burton Williams and tells him what happened. She hears that her sister can get ten years for bigamy. She asks him to hurry and come over right away.

Then someone rings the doorbell. It is Mr. Howell, who represents widower Stephen Dorchester Cormack, the man Clarice married that night.

He mistakes Paula for Clarice and offers her to handle a quick divorce for five thousand dollars.

The doorbell rings again and Burton enters. He tells Howell that they will not accept the offer and Howell leaves.

Burton explains to Paula that they can't sue for divorce, because Clarice had committed a crime, bigamy, and if they went through with the divorce, all would come out. The only way to get out of this, is to get the first marriage with Michael annulled.

They must get Clarice out of the country, while Paula pretends to be Clarice and acts as Mr. Cormack's wife. She must do everything she can to prevent them from starting a divorce, before Burton can get the annulment.

When Paula tells Howell that she's ready to take her place in the Cormack's home, she hears that there are also two children living there.

Paula arrives at Mr. Cormack's Long Island home and meets the children coming down the stairs. They are clearly not happy to see her. In fact they resent her and they will do anything to get rid of her.

What will happen next?

Are the children going to misbehave?

What is the slimy Michael up to, blackmailing Paula and the children?

Will the first marriage be annulled in time?

Is Clarice going to prison for bigamy?

A delightful comedy with a - what else would you expect -  happy ending?

You've found a '30s film that I actually haven't heard of! astonished I thought I'd better mention that since of course movies of this vintage are my "thing" - yet there's nothing about this one that I'm able to comment.

I love romantic comedies. And those from that era are so wonderfully lighthearted. You can imagine sitting there in the movie theatre, laughing and having nothing else to think about for a moment. relaxed
