The story of a young Sydney band trying to get a foothold in the competitive world of rock n' roll. After the band's first gig is a colossal failure, the lead singer takes it upon himself to go out and pursue the most successful rock manager in the country. Meanwhile, the other members of the band continue to deal with the kind of everyday life issues that can ultimately tear a band apart. It may be the dawn of a new millennium, but it's still a long way to the top if you want to rock n' roll.

Seit Freddy (Kick Gurry) von einem musikalisch enthemmten Punk in die Freuden der Live-Performance eingeführt wurde, hat er einen großen Traum: Mit seiner eigenen Band will er Sydneys Rockszene erobern - zumindest aber den ersten Gig landen. Als er Australiens erfolgreichsten Bandmanager kennen lernt, glaubt sich Freddy am Ziel. Doch der Branchen-Guru lässt die Garagenrocker zappeln: Ohne professionelles Demo-Tape läuft bei ihm gar nichts. Ausgerechnet jetzt aber ist die Band völlig pleite und ihre Mitglieder obendrein durch ein heftig rotierendes Beziehungskarussell abgelenkt...

Una joven banda de garaje de Sidney, Australia, sueña con lo mismo que todas: triunfar en el mundo de la música. Su manager finalmente consigue ponerlos en contacto con un ejecutivo de una importante discográfica, pero los problemas personales entre los distintos componentes del grupo comienzan a aparecer, complicándolo todo... El realizador australiano de origen egipcio Alex Proyas ("El cuervo", "Dark City") dirige esta historia que, a ritmo de música y en clave de comedia, explora los entresijos del nacimiento de una banda de rock, el oscuro mundo de las discográficas y los problemas implícitos de la fama y el estrellato. Proyas, que también es coautor del guión, introdujo aspectos autobiográficos en la historia, de cuando él, siendo un joven que todavía vivía en Australia y formaba parte de un grupo experimental de teclados, soñaba con alcanzar algún día la fama.
