Een voorspelling vertelt dat de jongere tweeling Anton zijn broer Gregor wil vermoorden in de Zwarte Kamer van het kasteel. Gregor is een slechte baron, gehaat door iedereen en Anton wordt hoog in de vaandel gehouden. Wanneer Gregor jaloers wordt, probeert hij een drastisch plan te verzinnen om zijn broer te vermoorden en zo zijn titel weer terug te krijgen.

In a 16th-century European town, the ruling family has been given a prophecy that, should there ever be twin boys born, the younger will murder the older; so is dismayed when twins are born to the popular baron. The older grows to be a selfish, slovenly man, who inherits the castle at his father's death and becomes ruler over the formerly happy villagers. He enjoys his power until he learns his younger brother is returning from abroad and, afraid of the prophecy, he determines to murder his sibling, hide his body in the "black room" - an old torture chamber sealed away behind the fireplace - and then impersonate him, right down to his withered arm. In this way he hopes to not only avoid the prophecy, but also escape consequences of his other criminal deeds and obtain marriage to a local girl of the nobility...

Le seigneur local d'une petite province tchèque vient d'être père de jumeaux, baptisés Gregor et Anton. Cette double naissance sème la consternation, car selon une ancienne légende, le plus jeune des enfants tuera son frère, avec un poignard, dans la Chambre Noire, une pièce du château, dont les murs sont recouverts d'onyx. On décide donc de murer l'endroit. Les années passent...

Una maledizione grava su un'antica casata mitteleuropea: fondata da due gemelli, uno dei quali uccise l'altro, si estinguerà con due gemelli di cui uno è destinato a compiere un nuovo fratricidio. Dei due fratelli di cui si tratta, uno è una specie di feroce Barbablù, l'altro invece è buono.

W Tyrolu pod koniec XVI wieku, rządzącemu baronowi de Berghman rodzą się bliźnięta, najmłodszy Anton zostaje odesłany z powodu rodzinnej legendy, głoszącej że, jmłodszy bliźniak zabije starszego. Dwie dekady później starszy bliźniak Gregor (Boris Karloff) organizuje powrót Antona (również Karloffa), aby bracia mogli wspólnie rządzić swoim krajem. Po przybyciu Antona dochodzi do tajemniczych zniknięć i morderstw, a kiedy miejscowi chłopi oskarżają Gregora, ten morduje i przyjmuje tożsamość swojego bardziej popularnego bliźniaka.
