It’s campy, but it’s true camp. In other words, it’s not trying to be campy like a lot of tongue in cheek exploitation flicks of the 70s. You can sense that Rollin was genuinely delivering the most artistic vision he could, despite its low budget and production limitations.
In that respect I put him in the same class as Herzog. Lips of Blood has the same unreal vibe and raw look as Nosferatu (1979). but with naked chicks.
tbh I had to watch this twice before I got it. It’s a really basic vampire love story, but it’s deliberately convoluted by its dreamlike presentation. Inexplicable things happen and you’re not supposed to understand or scrutinize, like the protagonist who sleepwalks thru the story until the end. Love the surreal lighting coming from impossible directions, the empty streets, total lack of background activity. If you think about it, this is exactly how a dream is.
My 1st Rollin film… I’ll def binge a few more. Rollin fans, any suggestions?
