Mischa, a mute boy, sets out on a surrealistic journey together with his father and two men. Their means of transportation is an old Soviet locomotive, loaded with stolen coal. The travellers intend to sell off the loot on their way through the borderless steppes of inner Russia. As a parallel to the main plot, sequences of a mysterious travelling circus keep reappearing in a very suggestive way. Many of the odd artists at the circus are people that the four protagonists encounter in the wilderness along the overgrown railway. All through the movie there is a sensation of magic crossed with pure realism, stressed by the crackling communistic infrastructure and a twisted sense of humor. The border between reality and fantasy is very subtle here. The Railway is a story about strong family ties, but also an ambitious interpretation of the clash between the Russia of old and new. One could call it the rebirth of a long forgotten genre: the Russian wonder story.

In una piccola città ai margini della grande steppa siberiana due prodi personaggi mettono a punto un assurdo piano per risolvere i problemi della scuola di cui uno è preside e per affacciarsi al magico e misterioso mondo sconfinato della steppa con il suo bambino l'altro: rubare la gloriosa locomotiva a vapore guidata dal pioniere russo ferroviere che fa bella vista come monumento storico nel centro del paese e avventurarsi sulla vecchia linea ferrata che attraversa la Siberia, ormai dismessa , ma che un tempo era l'orgoglio di tutti i piccoli villaggi che attraversava, l'orgoglio di un paese in cui la forza della passione e del romanticismo permeava ogni cosa; trasformarsi in nostalgici dei vecchi carovanieri che portavano merce da vendere lungo il viaggio, scambiando il carbone furtivamente sottratto alla grande miniera a cielo aperto con tutto quanto possa servire per comprare materiale per la scuola.

Параллельно с основным сюжетом снова и снова появляются сцены загадочного бродячего цирка в очень многообещающей форме. Многие из необычных артистов в цирке - это люди, с которыми четыре главных героя встречаются в дикой местности вдоль заросшей железной дороги. На протяжении всего фильма присутствует ощущение волшебства, смешанного с чистым реализмом, подчеркнутое потрескивающей коммунистической инфраструктурой и извращенным чувством юмора. Граница между реальностью и фантазией здесь очень тонкая. «Железная дорога» - это история о крепких семейных узах, но также и амбициозная интерпретация столкновения старой и новой России. Это можно было бы назвать возрождением давно забытого жанра: русской сказки о чудесах.
