In 2000 kiest Friesland de Sportman van de Eeuw. Sake Wiarda probeert de rest van de jury te overtuigen en vertelt het levensverhaal van paalzitter Taeke Jongsma. Al vanaf de lagere school probeert Taeke te ontsnappen aan de onderdrukking van de arbeiders in de jaren dertig. Paalzitten biedt hem een uitweg, maar ook de kans om een voorbeeld te stellen voor de onderdrukten. Taeke grijpt die kans, maar daardoor glipt de vrouw van zijn dromen door zijn handen. Blijft hij zitten, of kiest hij voor zijn grote liefde?

In the year 2000, a jury convenes in Friesland to elect the Sportsman of the Century. One man, Sake Wiarda, tries to convince his fellow-jury members not to nominate a sports hero like Abe Lenstra, but to give preference to the Frisian pole-squatter Taeke Jongsma. In flashbacks, Wiarda tells his audience the life story of this worker's son, who since childhood tries to escape the oppression of the working class in the thirties. Taeke finds out he is a splendid pole-squatter, but his record attempts are repeatedly thwarted by his great rival in love. Against the background of the historical changes in the previous century, the love story gradually unfolds between the pole-squatter and the farmer's daughter.

Den unge Taeke tävlar i den udda sporten pålsittning. Till en början tävlar han bara för att slippa jobba men efterhand finner han en glädje i det. Han blir förälskad i Tjitske, men då Taeke inte vill avbryta en tävling för att hjälpa henne hemma på gården lämnar hon honom för hans rival Rintje. Taekes liv tar en annan vändning - men han kan inte glömma Tjitske.
