What do Patricia, Badou, François, Dingo and P'tit Jeannot have in common? They live in the Paris suburbs, they are young, they are on the verge of breaking away from school, from the working world or from the Army. Their meeting place is "La Javanaise", a bar held by no-nonsense Janine and her lighter husband Lucien. There they mix with their idol, Daniel, also known as Frankie Mégalo, a film projectionist and a rocker without a band. Most of the efforts of these born idlers will consist in finding a band and a venue for Frankie to perform and in laying hands on cash by means fair or foul to go to the Southern sun.

Patricia, Badou, Richard, François, Dingo et P'tit Jeannot habitent tous la banlieue. Leur quartier général c'est le café "La Javanaise" et leur idole n'est autre que le projectionniste du cinéma voisin, Frankie Mégalo, chanteur de rock en mal d'orchestre et de concert. Devant la démission des parents, seule la police joue encore un rôle dans le quartier. Or, après avoir ou déserté ou quitté le lycée ou leur emploi à la suite d'altercations et de disputes familiales plus ou moins vives, les "crans d'arrêt" comme les appelle Frankie, décident de tous partir sur la côte. Pour ce faire, ils commettent un hold up, le soir même où Frankie se produit sur scène. Mais l'affaire tourne mal et après une poursuite mouvementée, au cours de laquelle P'tit Jeannot est tué, ils sont finalement arrêtés et brutalement interrogés par les policiers.
