One day, Grigori appears at the hospital in a state of excitement and informs her that his mother has died. Margarita, who also knew this friendly old lady, is saddened at the news. On the other hand, the announcement makes her hopeful that things might just work out for her and Grigori after all.

Margarita travail comme médecin à l'hôpital. Elle aime son vieil ami Grigori sans espérer être un jour heureuse avec lui. En effet, Grigori est marié et pour différentes raisons, ne peut divorcer. Il arrive un jour à la clinique, bouleversé, et annonce à Margarita que sa mère est morte. Margarita est désolée, elle connaissait bien l’aimable vieille dame. D’un autre côté, cette nouvelle lui fait espérer qu’entre Grigori et elle, ça pourrait quand même peut-être marcher. C’est alors qu’il lui demande confirmation de la mort naturelle de sa mère…
