L'acció transcorre a Camelot. Leonette, la filla d'un comte, està enamorada de John, un intrèpid cavaller, però el seu pare desaprova aquesta relació. Un dia els sorprèn junts, i en John es veu obligat a fugir. Passat algun temps, uns víkings assalten el castell, assassinant el Comte i la seva família. Poc després, apareix a Anglaterra un cavaller negre, que jura venjar la mort del comte i els seus.

John, a blacksmith and swordsmith, is tutored at Camelot. As a commoner, he can't hope to win the hand of Lady Linet, daughter of the Earl of Yeoniland, so he creates a secret alternate identity as the Black Knight.
