Why wouldn't they keep a journal of stuff they discover, so they don't have to keep figuring it out?

Looks like neurodegeneration is progressing. They are losing basic skills and each one is at his own stage of the disease.

Maybe. But just basic stuff like "we are together" or "beware the tall thin guy," should be doable.
