1987 – Superstar Prince gibt drei legendäre Konzerte im Sportpaleis Ahoy in Rotterdam. Es sind die letzten Shows seiner Europatournee. Aus den Zusammenschnitten dieser Konzerte, kombiniert mit später aufgezeichneten Szenen und Choreographien, entsteht der Konzertfilm. In den Hauptrollen: Prince, die Tänzerin Cat und der Tänzer Wally Safford.

In 1987, to capitalize on his growing success in Europe, Prince toured extensively to promote the album of the same name and sales increased accordingly. However, the United States remained resistant to his latest album, and sales began to drop; it was at this point that Prince decided to film a live concert promoting the new material, for eventual distribution to theaters in America. Featuring the band that accompanied Prince on his 1987 Sign o' the Times Tour, including dancer Cat Glover, keyboardist Boni Boyer, bassist Levi Seacer, Jr., guitarist Miko Weaver, drummer Sheila E. and former member of The Revolution keyboardist Dr. Fink, the film sees the group perform live on stage (although "U Got the Look" is represented by its promotional music video).

En 1987, au faîte de sa gloire, la superstar Prince donne trois concerts légendaires à Rotterdam, achevant en triomphe sa tournée européenne "Sign O' The Times". Autour du flamboyant double-album sorti la même année, il compose un spectacle époustouflant, tout en costumes délirants et en danses suggestives.

De film is een registratie van een concert dat Prince in Rotterdam gaf in het kader van zijn Sign O The Times Tour en bevat elf van de dertien songs van zijn gelijknamige dubbelalbum. Alle songs behalve Nows The Time werden door hem zelf gecomponeerd.

Sign o' the Times es el disco más ecléctico que Prince haya grabado nunca, abarcando una enorme variedad de estilos, tales como Rock, Pop, Soul, Funk, algunas bases tomadas del Dance e incluso Jazz o Jazz Electrónico. Prince se hace cargo de absolutamente todo esta vez, desde la composición hasta la instrumentación (exceptuando los instrumentos de viento), pasando por los arreglos y la producción.
