在神户大空袭中母亲身亡，任海军军官的父亲杳无音信。清太和小妹节子无奈下去远房亲戚家寄居。由于阿姨待他们很不好，清太被迫带着节子出走谋生，两人在郊区的防空洞里安家栖身。

然而战况不断恶化，兄妹俩失去了生活来源。因为营养失调，节子越来越瘦，清太竭尽全力守护妹妹。

最后在1945年8月15日，日本宣布无条件投降。战争结束了，成为孤儿的清太和节子的生命之火也犹如萤火虫的微光即将熄灭。

Set during World War II, the film follows a young brother and sister as they attempt to survive the aftermath of the firebombing of Kobe City.

Seita, quatorze ans et sa petite sœur Setsuko âgée de quatre ans, sont orphelins. En cet été 1945, la ville de Kobe, où ils habitaient avec leur mère, a été rasée par les bombardements américains. Ils sont recueillis par une tante éloignée à Nishinomiya. Malgré les souffrances dues à la la guerre, leur séjour s'annonce bien. Ils ont pu apporter quelques provisions avec eux à la grande satisfaction de leur famille d'accueil. Cependant, au fil des jours, les relations avec leur tante se dégrade. Elle devient de plus en plus tyrannique et les considère comme des enfants paresseux, sans reconnaissance à son égard.

It is post-war Japan, just weeks before American troops arrive for occupation. In the city of Kobe, a boy lies dying in a train station. By his body lies a small metal candy container. A janitor, not sure what to make of its ashy contents, pitches it into the night. As fireflies float softly around it, the ghostly figures of the boy and his little sister emerge...Thus begins the story of 14-year old Seita and his four year old sister, Setsuko. Left orphaned and homeless after a fire-bombing raid on their city, they are forced to survive on their own in a society where rations are scare, and hopes often turn to despair. Finding life with relatives unbearable, they struggle to survive on their own in an abandoned bomb shelter in the country.

Il film è incentrato sulla storia di due fratelli, Setsuko e Seita, che vivono in Giappone durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Dopo la morte della madre, uccisa da un raid aereo, vengono ospitati a casa di alcuni parenti. Ma quando il conflitto inizia ad inasprirsi, i due bambini scappano dalla città, e trovano riparo in un'abitazione abbandonata. In attesa della fine del conflitto, e del ritorno del padre (partito in guerra) i due bambini cercano di sopravvivere aiutandosi a vicenda.

1945年、神戸は大空襲に見舞われ、清太は心臓の悪い母を先に防空壕へ避難させ、幼い妹節子を連れて後を追う。空襲の後、避難所である学校に着いた清太だったが、そこには、全身にやけどを負い瀕死の母の姿があった。母はそのまま息を引き取り、清太は節子と共に西宮にある叔母の家に間借りするが、次第に清太たちを厄介者扱いするようになる。嫌味を言われ、ご飯も満足に食べさせてもらえない生活に耐え切れなくなった清太は、家出を決意し、節子と２人で池のほとりの横穴での生活を始める。

O filme relata a história de dois irmãos, Seita e Setsuko, no período da Segunda Guerra Mundial no Japão. O pai deles é convocado a defender o país na guerra, pois faz parte da marinha japonesa, e a mãe falece em um bombardeio de aviões norte-americanos. A partir daí, o filme mostra a luta pela sobrevivência das duas crianças, em meio à pobreza e miséria que assola o país. Fome, doenças e a falta de generosidade e sensibilidade dos adultos faz deste percurso um dos filmes mais bonitos e comoventes sobre o trágico quadro gerado pela guerra.

Narra la historia de Seita y Setsuko, dos hermanos huérfanos que deben sobrevivir por si mismos a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Tercera adaptación cinematográfica de la novela de Akiyuki Nosaka, tras la cinta de animación de Isao Takahata (1988) y la película realizada para televisión por Toya Sato (2005).
