Gregor is a young soldier entering Germany with the victorious Soviet troops at the end of WWII. But he is also the child of left-wing Germans who fled from Hitler and spent the war in the Soviet Union. As a result, his return to Germany is ambivalent; he finds he is a stranger in his own land. As they enter Germany, Gregor begins to realize that he is different from all his comrades in arms, for this defeated land is his home country, the Germans he meets are his compatriots. He is a victor, but also one of the vanquished. He attempts to understand the Germans he meets along his way, but he is a 19-year-old: inquisitive, occasionally uncomprehending and repeatedly dismayed by the atrocities and lies he encounters.

En avril 1945, l'Armée rouge fait reculer progressivement la Wehrmacht. Le jeune lieutenant Gregor Hecker, d'origine allemande, revient pour la première fois dans son pays d'origine après douze ans d'exil. Avec quelques hommes sous ses ordres, on lui confie l'administration d'une petite ville. Cherchant à pacifier la zone, il entre en contact avec les habitants. Mais se pose bien vite pour lui la question de son identité : est-il un Soviétique ou un Allemand ? Que signifie pour lui cette patrie en plein débâcle, à laquelle il se sent si étranger ?

April 1945. In der Uniform eines sowjetischen Leutnants kommt der 19-jährige Deutsche Gregor Hecker in seine Heimat zurück. Er war acht, als seine Eltern mit ihm nach Moskau emigrierten. Auf dem Weg der 48. Armee kommt er an Berlin vorbei und fordert noch vereinzelt kämpfende deutsche Soldaten zum Überlaufen auf. Einige kommen, andere antworten mit Schüssen. Täglich begegnet Gregor Menschen verschiedenster Art, hoffnungsvollen, verwirrten, verzweifelten. Bei seinen russischen Freunden fühlt er sich zu Hause, viele der Deutschen geben ihm Rätsel auf. Langsam begreift er, dass es „die Deutschen“ nicht gibt. Die erste Begegnung mit aus dem Konzentrationslager befreiten Antifaschisten wird für ihn zu einem bewegenden Erlebnis. Und als sein Freund Sascha bei seinem letzten Kampfeinsatz fällt, steht für den erschütterten Gregor fest, dass er hier am Aufbau eines anderen, besseren Deutschlands wirken wird.
