In the early 1920s, Georges Laffont, traumatized by the horrific trench warfare, decides to leave his life behind and travel to West Africa. In the vast territories of Upper Volta he - with the help of Diofo, artist and also survivor of the Great War - try to recruit the villagers as labor for plantations in Ghana. But his adventure leads him to a dead-end, and he comes back to Paris desperate to find his place in the world.

Georges, héros de 14 fuyant son passé, mène depuis quatre ans une vie nomade et aventureuse en Afrique lorsqu'il décide de rentrer en France. Il y retrouve sa mère et son frère Marcel, invalide de guerre muré dans le silence. Peinant à retrouver une place dans cet Après-guerre où la vie a continué sans lui, il fait la rencontre d'Hélène, professeure de langue des signes avec qui il noue une relation tourmentée...

In den frühen 20er-Jahren beschliesst Georges Laffont, traumatisiert durch die Gräuel des Ersten Weltkriegs, sein bisheriges Leben hinter sich zu lassen und nach Obervolta in Westafrika zu reisen. Der Künstler Diofo, auch er ein Weltkriegsüberlebender, begleitet ihn. Schwer beladen mit afrikanischen Stammesmasken kehrt Georges nach Paris zurück, wo sein Bruder Marcel, ein Kriegsveteran, der während des Krieges taub geworden ist, mit ihrer Mutter zusammenlebt. Im verzweifelten Versuch, sich wieder einzuleben, wird Georges bei Hélène, einer Gebärdensprachlehrerin, Trost finden.

A principio de los años 1920, Georges Laffont, traumatizado por lo vivido durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, decide cambiar de vida e irse a vivir a Alto Volta, en Africa, acompañado por el artista Diofo, que también sobrevivió a la guerra. Cargado de máscaras tribales, Georges regresa a París para encontrar a su hermano Marcel, excombatiente a quien la guerra dejó sordo y que ahora vive con su madre.
