Discuss Crimes of Passion

I'm a bit surprised I've never seen this one because back in 84 this would have blown my mind.

I read that Alec Baldwin auditioned for this. And that Jeff Bridges would have done it. Oh, what a better film it would have been. The lead is not very good. There's a scene where our lead actor wrestles with his movie kids. One of the kids takes a roll of lifesavers off the bottom of his shoe -- near the heel -- by removing gaffers tape. WTF was that? Was that supposed to be in the movie? What is that? Reminded me a bit of a film I watched a few days ago The Temp. A solid film with a lead actor that might be in over his head.

The sex is uncomfortable to watch. Every sex scene in the film is.

The black humor regarding middle class yuppies being assholes works but is not fun to watch. Our lead who may be mentally challenged, after using a hotdog and mustard as a fake penis, does an imitation of a giant penis at his barbeque and then has the nerve to as his wife why she's upset about it. Annie Potts was in Ghost Busters the same year. She is excellent.

But Kathleen Turner and Anthony Perkins are fantastic. Like maybe the best they've ever been. Turner was taking a big risk here. She was just becoming an leading lady and she does this! She truly has a duel role and cracks sex jokes like Mae West non-stop but as a way to entertain her johns like she's putting on a show before the sex.

The film is bananas and starts with foul talk about 10 seconds into the film and never stops. Be warned. I believe the copy (which looks fantastic) I watched from Itunes is the uncut version. Apparently the cop-night stick bit was trimmed as were a number of the erotic art photos from the original release.

The movie is odd. The Rick Wakeman soundtrack dates the film. It also makes the film feel more like late 70s than mid eighties. The music video in the movie is on Youtube. Yes, 80s music videos were this bad and more often than not shot near a back yard swimming pool. I think it may have been more profound in 1984. Now it's just a parody of the times.
