Discuss Gargoyles

According to the behind-the-scenes info, the director didn’t like Bernie Casey’s voice as the head Gargoyle, so they dubbed in the narrator’s voice. Having heard Casey’s voice, I think it would have been VERY menacing.

I haven’t seen this but I’m a big fan of Bernie from The Martian Chronicles. When he goes rogue and starts picking off the crew he was plenty menacing.

My guess is that the excuse that the Gargoyles director didn’t like his voice might’ve been made up. The truth is it can be expensive to hire big name actors (which Casey was in the 70s) to come back for 2-3 days to overdub their voices in post.

Since the gargoyles were all wearing masks, I’m sure everything had to be dubbed since actors sound ridiculous talking through masks. The production may not have had the budget or opportunity to bring Bernie back so they went with the narrator who was already there in the studio. Would’ve taken just half an hour and cost literally nothing extra.

This is basically what happened in Flash Gordon (1980). The lawyers couldn’t work out the contract to get Sam Jones (Flash) to come back and dub his lines. So half the movie is another actor’s voice.

That could be the case. It’s just that since the Gargoyles’ voice were electronically altered, Casey could have done it. Also, do you know who played the female Gargoyle?

Hmm only 3 gargoyles are credited and they all have male names (Mickey, Greg & Rock). Looks like we got a mystery on our hands...

The ironic thing is the Female Gargoyle has dialogue while the other three male ones don’t. Yet they get billing and she doesn’t.
