The curiously named, Moondance Alexander is a spirited teen living with her eccentric mother. She is faced with another uneventful summer until she discovers a lost pinto pony named Checkers who has jumped out of his paddock. Although Moondance returns the horse to his rightful owner, the gruff and mysterious Dante Longpre, she is convinced that Checkers is a champion jumper in disguise and is determined to help him realize his full potential. Moondance manages to talk Dante into training her and Checkers for the Bow Valley Classic and despite the criticism of her peers; discovers that perseverance, loyalty and individuality can land you in the winner's circle.

Moondance Alexander è una vivace ragazzina di provincia che vive insieme a una madre eccentrica. All'inizio di un’ennesima estate noiosa un giorno incontra Checkers, un pony fuggito da un allevamento. Una volta restituito il pony, Moondance si convince che abbia delle grandi qualità di saltatore e chiede al proprietario di assumerla come stalliera ed insegnarle a saltare gli ostacoli con il fine di partecipare ad una grande competizione che si tiene nella contea durante l'estate: un’avventura che la porterà a vincere numerose gare e a sconfiggere lo scetticismo delle sue compagne.

Piętnastoletnia Moondance po śmierci ojca mieszka ze swą ekscentryczną matką. Próbuje odnaleźć własne miejsce w świecie, ale nie jest to łatwe – zwłaszcza na polu kontaktów towarzyskich ponosi klęskę za klęską. Wszystko to zmienia się, kiedy na jej drodze niespodziewanie staje uciekinier ze stajni – łaciaty konik Checkers. Moondance ha terminado el curso y no ha conseguido hacer ni una sola amiga. Las compañeras se ríen de ella por lo que se siente triste y sola, sobre todo desde que falleció su padre. De regreso a casa descubre que un caballo pinto llamado Checkers ha saltado escapándose de su cuadra. Moondance devuelve el caballo a su propietario, pero rápidamente ve el potencial del animal para la disciplina de salto de obstáculos, por lo que se decide a hacer de él un campeón.
