本片是为日本横浜开港150周年举办的纪念活动“开国博Y150”而制作的，是岩井俊二首次操刀动画作品。 故事背景设定在能够自在进行宇宙旅行的时代，以人类与机器人共同生存的行星“阿贝尔”为舞台，人形的机器人阿波罗（市原隼人 配音）与机器人形的人类米卡尔（上户菜 配音）获得了偷渡者的神秘OS，却被卷入一起充满迷团的事件之中。

Baton is a collection of three 20-minute Sci-fi anime films dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Yokohama city. On Planet Abel, human-like robot Apollo (Ichihara Hayato, Rookies) and robot-like human Mikaru (Ueto Aya, Azumi) come upon a stowaway robot with a mysterious "Cipher" chip. Not knowing Cipher's powers, Apollo takes the chip for fun, throwing both him and Mikaru headfirst into a mind-boggling mystery that affects the past, present, and future.

Un humanoïde, ayant en sa possession une carte mémorielle OS "Cipher", tente de pénétrer illégalement sur Abel, une planète où les humains et les robots coexistent en harmonie. Il est aussitôt pourchassé et détruit. Cependant Apollo, un robot ayant des traits humains, et son amie Mikaru, une humaine à apparence de robot, retrouvent les restes de Cipher. Apollo charge le programme en échangeant leurs langues mais commence à agir bizarrement. Le duo, interloqué, tente de percer cet étrange mystère qui va les conduire aux différentes dimensions de l'espace-temps.

Auf dem Planeten Abel koexistieren Menschen und Roboter. Eines Tages versucht ein mysteriöser blinder Passagier, der sich an Bord eines Transportschiffes befindet, unbemerkt auf den Planet zu kommen. Dabei wird er jedoch von Apollo, einem Roboter, der wie ein Mensch aussieht, und Mikaru, einem Mensch, der wie ein Roboter aussieht, entdeckt. Der blinde Passagier hat einen Speicherchip mit einer sehr hochentwickelten Software, der mysteriösen “Cipher” OS, in seinem Besitz. Aus einer Laune heraus nimmt Apollo den Speicherchip an sich, noch nicht ahnend, in was er da hineingeraten ist. Er beginnt, sich immer seltsamer zu verhalten, aber Mikaru weiß nicht, was los ist, oder dass Cipher hinter diesem seltsamen Verhalten steckt. Was ist Cipher und welche Geheimnisse verbirgt es?
