Franny and Zoe wake up one morning ready to go on a high school field trip. Their plans quickly change when Zoe drinks contaminated water and his head becomes a monstrous “zithead", soon turning Franny into one too. Soon the two of them set off on a bizarre journey, mutating other teenagers, encountering strange suburbanites, and developing a very unusual craving for chocolate. The army starts a statewide manhunt for the infected adolecents as they struggle to remain concious, try to figure out what’s happened to them, and draw nearer to a terrifying fate.

Franny e Zoe si svegliano una mattina pronte per partire per una gita scolastica. I loro piani cambiano rapidamente quando Zoe beve acqua contaminata e la sua testa diventa un mostruoso "zithead", trasformando presto anche Franny in uno di loro. Ben presto i due intraprendono un viaggio bizzarro, mutando altri adolescenti, incontrando strani abitanti di periferia e sviluppando un'idea molto un'insolita voglia di cioccolato. L'esercito avvia una caccia all'uomo in tutto lo stato per gli adolescenti infetti mentre lottano per rimanere coscienti, cercano di capire cosa è successo loro e si avvicinano a un destino terrificante.
