In a little French town everything goes on as usual and people seem friendly and good-natured, until the day two women arrive from Paris. A man gets off the same bus, and that very night he seizes the two women and asks for the most beautiful woman in town as their ransom. After the initial shock, the mayor, his brother, the prefect, the police, and the gendarmerie gather around the house where the two woman are imprisoned. It will be a test for everyone and each of them will show his/her real stuff: hypocrisy, meanness, or humanity concealed under their provincial respectability.

Un jeune déséquilibré, obsédé par les femmes et la violence, s'introduit dans une maison isolée et retient en otage ses deux occupants. La rançon qu'il exige du maire éberlué ne manque pas d'originalité: qu'on livre, non pas de l'argent, sans utilité, mais la plus belle fille du village. Les autorités, que ce soit le préfet, commissaire de police ou le maire se concertent et envisagent tour à tour les différents moyens de le satisfaire.

Messosi in contatto telefonico con il sindaco del villaggio, il pazzo esige, in cambio dei terrorizzati ostaggi, la ragazza più vistosa del posto, Marise, che è la stessa figlia del sindaco. Il commissario di polizia e il Prefetto del dipartimento si uniscono alle esigue e perplesse autorità locali, tra le quali si nota l'anziano parroco che attutisce il disgusto per quanto succede con solitarie e silenziose sorsate di cognac.
