民初女画家潘玉良的传奇一生。潘玉良原是江南的妓女出身,对绘画独有天分，却无人赏识。一次机缘让她认识了芜湖海关盐业总监潘赞化（尔东升饰），随即被纳为妾。她随潘赞化到了上海,因为见她喜欢绘画，潘赞化介绍了专业老师让她学习，从此开始了学画的学生生活。其后由于潘赞化的正室的介入让原本感情很好的二人渐渐产生了矛盾。她于是留学巴黎,渐渐成为国际著名的画家。上海美术学院校长刘海粟观念开明,请她回国任教,不料学风开放的欧洲与国内艺术界的情形大相径庭。一心为艺术的潘玉良被保守的知识分子们指责为“妓女艺术家”，抨击与阻碍她教授的人体画艺术......

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Yu-liang leaves a brothel in a small Chinese town, to become the second wife of Mr. Pan. While Pan is away at the revolution in Yunnan, Yu-liang learns to paint and takes art classes at the Shanghai Art Institute, until it is closed for painting nudes. Because she cannot bear him a son, Yu-liang leaves Pan to his first wife, and studies art in Paris, where she wins an award for a nude self-portrait. She returns to join Pan in Nanking in the 1930's, and becomes a Professor until it is discovered that she came from a brothel. She returns to Paris to live the rest of her life there, and finally gains a major exhibition of her work.

Pan Yuliang, une jeune orpheline, est vendue à une maison de plaisirs où elle travaille comme servante jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit en âge de se prostituer. Révoltée contre son sort, elle s’enfuit dès la première nuit et se réfugie chez un honorable fonctionnaire qui en fait sa concubine. Il lui apprend à lire et lui permet de peindre. La jeune femme révèle bientôt une véritable sensibilité d’artiste. Elle se sépare quelque temps de son amant afin d’étudier à Paris...
