美如一朵纯洁之花的道子（田中绢代 饰）在18岁那年嫁给了大自己12岁的秋山忠雄（森雅之 饰）。秋山是某私立大学的法语教授，虽然拥有显赫的地位和身份，但是其人的性格却与外表有着鲜明的对比。只不过为了维护家族的荣誉，当然还有传统女性所固有的品质与道德观念，道子隐忍着一切，小心而又疲惫地粉饰着秋山家的荣光。二战结束，道子的堂弟宫地勉（片山明彦 饰）从战场上归来，残酷的战火犀利早已让一曾纯真阳光的男孩变得身心受创。道子依然爱慕着勉，而充满忌妒心的秋山则不愿让其在自家居住。道子接受嫂子的建议，延请勉担任女儿的家庭教师，在武藏野的小道上，他们总算有了短暂的可以谈心的时机……

Set in post-war Japan, The Lady of Musashino tells the story of Michiko, a disillusioned young woman trapped in a loveless marriage. She confides in her younger cousin, Tsutomo, and the two become close, but decide not to consummate their affair. He instead becomes involved with the flirtatious Tomiko, who is also conducting an affair with Michiko's husband. When Michiko finds that her husband has abandoned her, she decides to take her fate into her own hands.

Michiko (Kinuyo Tanaka) è ricca, ma infelice a causa della monotonia del suo matrimonio. Insoddisfatta, inizia a sviluppare un forte interesse per il suo giovane cugino Tsutomu (Akihito Katayama), ma non è l'unica donna ad aver messo gli occhi su di lui.

대를 잇고자 아버지는 무남독녀 미치코를 보잘것없는 배경의 대학교수 타다오와 결혼시키고, 그를 데릴사위로 들인다. 전쟁에 휩쓸려 시간은 흐르고, 미치코는 선친의 유지를 받들며 가문을 지키려 한다. 그런데 이미 아내와도 소원해진 타다오는 학생들과도 거침없이 육체관계를 맺고, 아내의 친척 토미코와도 정분이 난다. 한편, 미치코의 사촌 츠토무가 귀향하는데, 미치코는 츠토무를 향한 감정을 억누르고, 그가 보내는 사랑을 부정한다.

Andra världskriget är över och efterkrigstidens brådska vänder upp och ned på det gamla. Krocken mellan det nya och traditionella river upp konflikter. Michiko sliter med sin plikt som fru till den otrogne Akiyama, samtidigt som den unge stilige kusinen Tsutomu visar intresse.
