Rather than risk the Klan recognizing the voice change or catching them out with inconsistencies why didn't they just get a white cop to make the initial call to set up the first meeting. It didn't seem like a particularly difficult thing to do and there was no apparent reason why it had to be Ron on the phone. Or why not even abandon the first meeting and get someone else to call and do the same thing a bit later? It seemed like they made their job a hell of a lot harder than it needed to be.
I'm sure there was a reason for it in the real story but it didn't come across in the film.

I know he did it spontaneously at first. But they didn't have to stick with him on the phone. And as I said above, they could have just started from scratch with a white officer. As portrayed in the film it seemed relatively simple to get a meeting.
