Tijdens de strijd van bevrijding tegen de Oostenrijkers, komen een bakker en een bandiet in opstand. Ze kennen elkaar niet en hebben niet veel verstand van politiek, maar ze komen wel voor zichzelf op, met alle gevolgen van dien.

In 1848, as Italy becomes engulfed in a bubbling revolution to finally get rid of the ruling Austrians, a patriotic prisoner named Cainazzo begins to wonder if he will soon get the chance to see the revolution in action away from his prison cell. Suddenly, a cannonball comes flying through the air and knocks the main wall of the prison down. Excited to have a chance to see the change taking place in person, Cainazzo hits a bumpy road when one of his former fellow prisoners yells out to all the revolutionary gangs that Cainazzo is not a patriot, but is in fact a traitor!

Conduit par la philosophie libertaire de son auteur, le film nous raconte l'histoire de deux amis, Cainazzo le malfaiteur et Romolo le boulanger, qui sont impliqués, sans le vouloir, dans les mouvements anti-Autrichiens qui bouleversent Milan en 1848.

Im März 1848 bricht in Mailand ein Aufstand aus, der die österreichischen Truppen zum Rückzug zwingt. Während der fünf Tage des Aufstands geraten der Gelegenheitsdieb und sein Freund Romolo zwischen die Fronten und erleben die wildesten Abenteuer. Doch das Schicksal meint es nicht gut mit den beiden.

Milano, dal 18 al 22 marzo del 1848: Cainazzo è un ladruncolo che rimane coinvolto per caso nell'insurrezione, così come il fornaio Romolo. I due diventano amici durante la costruzione delle barricate, gli attacchi dei rivoltosi e le rappresaglie degli asburgici. Romolo però, quando scoppiano i festeggiamenti per la vittoria, interviene a fermare le violenze di un rivoluzionario, segnando così il proprio destino.

Действие фильма происходит в 19 веке (1848 год) во время борьбы патриотических сил Италии против австрийского владычества. Случайный снаряд пробивает стену тюрьмы, чем успевает воспользоваться вор и бандит Кайнаццо. Пока он сидел в тюрьме, Италия превратилась в полигон для политических раздоров и баталий. Ничего не понимая в политике, на которую ему глубоко наплевать, Кайнаццо влипает в целую серию смешных, но часто страшных приключений вместе с пекарем Ромоло из Рима, чья пекарня была разрушена снарядом.

Milán, revuelta anti-austriaca de 1848. Cainazzo (Celentano), un delincuente de poca monta, y Rómulo (Cerusico) un panadero, se ven envueltos en los disturbios del momento. Asisten a reuniones en las que entran en contacto con los personajes más heterogéneos: agentes dobles, gentes sedientas de sangre, aventureros sin escrúpulos. Y como no desean ser marginados, participan de forma oportunista en la rebelión. Pero en medio de tanta injusticia y violencia, Rómulo reacciona instintivamente.
