2009年维也纳新年音乐会（Neujahrskonzert 2009），由阿根廷-以色列指挥家丹尼尔·巴伦博伊姆（Daniel Barenboim）担任指挥。他的指挥风格严谨又不失奔放，擅长处理德奥系作品。 2009年是联合国确定的国际天文年。决议由伽利略的故乡意大利提交。1609年，伽利略将望远镜第一次指向天空，这个开创性的伟大发现所触发的科技变革深深地影响并改变了我们的世界观。400年后，联合国宣布2009年为国际天文年。主题为“宇宙等你去探索（The Universe, Yours to Discover.）”。为此，巴伦博伊姆选择了《天体乐声圆舞曲》，来纪念这一历史性的时刻。同时，2009年又是佛朗茨·约瑟夫·海顿逝世200周年。海顿被誉为“交响乐之父”。他一生中创作了一百零四首交响曲。为纪念海顿这位奥地利维也纳古典乐派作曲家，巴伦博伊姆在2009年的维也纳新年音乐会上特意选择了他的《告别交响曲》的第四乐章。这也是维也纳新年音乐会历史上首次出现海顿的交响曲。另外，巴伦博伊姆还将指挥2014年的维也纳新年音乐会。
