Discuss Behind the Curve

This documentary is watchable but extremely one-sided. Mark Sargent, the primary focus of the film, is not only a man with crazy beliefs but also something of a narcissist – numerous times through the film he talks about himself along the lines of “I’m not a celebrity, but…” There are clearly some more rational and articulate ‘flat Earthers’ but they are relegated to the background. The filmmakers clearly set out to make a profile of a bunch of nutty conspiracy theorists, determined to continue tuning and retuning their experiments until they produce any shred of evidence in support of their beliefs, rather than attempt something more balanced. The sexual tension between the jovial Mark and the rather abrasive radio host, and the scene with the flat-Earther kid at the end, are rather uncomfortable.
