A shared love of fish leads to a variety of romantic predicaments in this offbeat comedy from writer and director Doris Dörrie. Otto (Christian Ulmen) and Leo (Simon Verhoeven) are two men from Germany who have launched a successful business in which they import koi, the beautiful Japanese fish, for collectors in their native land. While on a business trip to Japan, Otto and Leo meet Ida (Alexandra Maria Lara), a German tourist who is studying fashion design. Ida begins traveling with the two men, and surprisingly develops an infatuation with the rumpled Otto instead of the handsome Leo. When Ida discovers she's pregnant with Otto's child, the two marry, and upon their return to Germany, Ida attempts to join in the business by creating a line of scarves decorated with koi patterns. However, the honeymoon proves short-lived, and Ida's presence creates a rift between Otto and Leo, as the latter sets up his own concern, raising koi with his new bride, Yoko (Young-Shin Kim).

Zufällig kreuzen sich im fernen Japan die Wege der Modedesignerin Ida sowie der beiden Koi-Experten Otto und Leo. Obwohl auch Leo Idas Reize erkennt, ist es Otto, der zum Zuge kommt. Die beiden heiraten sogar noch vor Ort. Zurück in Deutschland treten schon bald konträre Lebensauffassungen zu Tage. Während Otto eher ein Anhänger des süßen Nichtstuns ist, hat Ida eine Karriere in der Bekleidungsbranche fest im Auge. Als dann noch ein Kind den Haushalt bereichert, wird's kritisch. Da sieht Leo seine Chance, doch noch bei Ida zu landen.

인생은 우연히 찾아온 인연으로 좌우된다. 일본을 여행하던 패션 디자이너 지망생 이다(알렉산드라 마리아 라라)는 우연히 오토(크리스티안 울멘)와 레오(지몬 페어회펜), 두 남자를 만난다. 이다는 수의사인 오토에게 매료돼 바로 간소한 일본식 결혼식을 올리고 텐트에서 첫날밤을 보낸다. 뮌헨으로 돌아온 둘은 오토가 왕진하러 다니는 캠핑카에서 신접살림 차린다. 이다는 임신과 동시에 비단잉어의 색감에서 영감 받은 손뜨개 스카프를 인정받아 패션회사에서 물량을 주문받는다. 그 후로 오토는 아이와 잉어를 키우며 사는데 만족하고, 이다는 점점 패션디자이너로 억척스럽게 일해 나간다. 최고 디자이너로 성공하겠다는 야망으로 오토와의 부부관계를 긴장시키는 이다에게 일본여자 요코(김 영신)와 결혼한 레오가 접근하고, 요코는 오토에게 접근한다. 도리스 되리 감독은 물고기들의 대화로 설명을 가미하는데, 주제는 그림 형제의 우화 “어부와 아내”에서 영감을 받았으며 “왜 여자는 만족을 모르는가”라는 부제를 달았다. 전 세계 여류 감독 중 가장 역량 있는 도리스 되리 감독은 말한다: “우리 여자들은 직업의 성공과 사랑, 모두 원한다”
