Nevada, 1865. Complint una missió, un escamot de soldats confederats vestits de civil intercepta un carregament d'or transportat per tropes de cavalleria de la Unió. In 1865, a troop of Confederate soldiers led by Major Matt Stewart attack the wagon of gold escorted by Union cavalry and the soldiers are killed. The only wounded survivor tells that the war ended one month ago, and the group decides to take the gold and meet their liaison that knew that the war ended but did not inform the troop. The harsh Rolph Bainter kills the greedy man and the soldiers flee in his wagon driven by Major Stewart. When they meet a posse chasing them, Stewart gives wrong information to misguide the group; however, they have an accident with the wagon and lose the horses. They decide to stop a stagecoach and force the driver to transport them, but the posse returns and they are trapped in the station with the passenger. They realize that the men are not deputies and have no intention to bring them to justice but take the stolen gold.

En 1865, un groupe de soldats confédérés conduits par le Major Matt Stewart attaque un convoi de l'Union transportant de l'or. Un survivant parmi les victimes leur apprend que la guerre est terminée depuis un mois, ce qui fait d'eux des criminels. Ils se rendent alors compte qu'ils ont été désinformés par le commanditaire du coup.

Ils décident de garder l'or pour eux, mais la nouvelle de l'attaque se propage. Ils sont vite pris en chasse par un groupe d'hommes déterminés à mettre la main sur le butin. Pour leur échapper, ils s'emparent d'une diligence dans laquelle se trouvent Molly Hull et son courtisan, Cass Browne. Après une course poursuite, ils se retrouvent acculés dans un relais avec le tenancier et sa fille. Les tensions surviennent entre les personnages tandis qu'ils doivent résister aux assauts de leurs poursuivants.

Nesta produção, Scott está maravilhoso, mas seu papel não é de herói, ele é o Major Matt, o líder de um grupo de ex-soldados Confederados. O filme inicia com Matt e seu grupo atacando um carregamento de ouro da União - apesar da guerra ter acabado há um mês. Sabendo que ele e seu pelotão poderiam ser enforcados por assassinato, Matt decide levar alguns reféns. O filme não é tão previsível quanto soa, entretanto a relação de Matt com um dos reféns (Donna Reed) é um pouco diferente. Felizmente, a química interpretativa entre os dois astros, faz a relação deles se destacar na trama. Em termos de ação o filme é fantástico. O Laço do Carrasco é uma pérola do gênero, uma das belas obras da filmografia de Scott.
