Píše se rok 1918 a Ali se vrací domů z války, kde bojoval za poraženou stranu. Zjišťuje také, že dívka, kterou miloval, se mezitím provdala za jiného muže. Věci se začínají dávat do pohybu, když přicházejí do turecka britští vojáci. Boxerská minulost, záliba v hazardu a slabost pro ženy se nyní Alimu velmi hodí k tomu, aby mohl uskutečnit svůj plán. After the First World War, the Allies occupy Istanbul. The protagonist, Yandim Ali is a rogue, discharged from the navy, who doesn't believe that the country can be saved, until he meets Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk), who plans to start a resistance in Anatolia against the occupying Allies, as well as the collaborators of an Ottoman government, that exists only on paper.

Am 13. November 1918 hat der erste Weltkrieg die Türkei erreicht - feindliche Flotten ankern am Bosporus, Istanbul ist besetzt, Terror und Denunziation sind an der Tagesordnung. Yandim Ali (Kenan Imirzalioglu) hat der Marine den Rücken gekehrt und träumt wie viele Landsleute vom Neuanfang in einem anderen Land, am besten in Wien mit seiner Geliebten Defne (Cansu Dere). Auch er glaubt nicht mehr an die Rettung seiner Heimat - bis sich sein Weg schicksalhaft mit dem von General Mustafa Kemal kreuzt und er sich eines anderen besinnt.

Yandım Ali, Bahriye Mektebinden kaçak, donanmadan terhis, yıllarca cephelerde savaşmış ve memleketin kurtuluşundan ümidi kesmiş bir külhan beyidir.. Evli bir sevgilisi vardır. Tek hayali biraz para kazanıp sevgilisini kaçırmak ve Viyana’ya gitmektir. Ancak... Yandım Ali’ nin yolu bir gün Mustafa Kemal’le kesişir. Ve o anda fikri değişir.
