Recognizing no boundaries to her love, Angele manages to foment riots, rages and tragedy in colonial Algeria. Angele, an Algerian colonist with impeccably French origins, has fallen in love with Said, the assistant in her brother-in-law's bakery shop. Said is conscious of his Arab origins and traditions, and Angele has her work cut out for her if she wants to persuade him to marry her. Once she does, all hell breaks loose, as neither her European-origin peers nor Said's conservative Arab family approve of the union. When word of the proposed marriage gets out, strikes, violence and murder quickly follow, ruining not only Angele's life, but the lives of those around her. Her brother-in-law Paco, meanwhile, has been doggedly trying to get along and raise his family in an increasingly chaotic and difficult situation.

Alger, 1945, après la victoire des alliés. La vie s'écoule dans la joie pour Angèle et sa soeur Alice, maman pour la deuxième fois. Mais déjà les tensions et les fossés entre les différentes communautés grandissent. La passion naissante entre Angèle et Saïd se renforce, à contre courant d'un monde qui bascule déjà dans la haine.

Paco è di origine spagnola e fa il panettiere ad Algeri insieme all'amico Said. Paco è sposato con Alice e ha due figli, Antoine e Vincent. Alice ha una sorella minore, Angéle, che lavora con lei alla fabbrica Bastos. Angéle è molto attratta da Said e assume nei suoi confronti atteggiamenti provocanti, che sconcertano Alice. In fabbrica le condizioni di lavoro sono pesanti e vengono commessi molti abusi, anche di carattere sessuale: alcune operaie, fra cui Angéle, ne hanno abbastanza e cominciano uno sciopero. Intanto Alice e Paco sono diventati gestori della panetteria, ma la rabbia e la violenza stanno per esplodere con conseguenze imprevedibili.
