Basada en el llibre per a nens de Hanna Schott, aquesta pel·lícula d'animació explica la història de Fritzi, estudiant de quart grau, a la ciutat de Leipzig, a Alemanya de l'Est, durant l'estiu del 1989. Se suposa que tindrà cura del gos del seu millor amiga, Sophie, durant l'estiu, però descobreix que Sophie i la seva família han fugit a Occident a través d'Hongria. Així que Fritzi fa tot el possible per reunir-se amb la seva amiga. Lipsko 1989. Dvanáctiletá Fany se s láskou stará o Sputnika, psa její nejlepší kamarádky Sophie, která odjela s maminkou na letní prázdniny do Maďarska. Na začátku školního roku se však Sophie do třídy nevrátila… jako mnoho jiných uprchla s maminkou na Západ. Fany se odvážně vydává kamarádku hledat, chce jí vrátit psa Sputnika. September 1989 in the GDR. With the change of the general mood in the country, the life of 12-year-old FRITZI changes as well. Her best friend Sophie has fled with her mother through Hungary to West Germany and the only thing Fritzi has left is Sophie's little dog Sputnik. Wschodnie Niemcy, rok 1989. Przyjaciółka Fritzi - Sophie wyjeżdża na wakacje za granicę, powierzając jej pod opiekę psa. Jesienią Sophie nie wraca do szkoły - zostaje w zachodnich Niemczech. Fritzi obserwuje, jak w szkole tworzą się podziały na lepszych i gorszych, a wokół organizowane są potajemne spotkania. 12-latka staje się świadkiem pokojowej rewolucji. Ona sama chce znów zobaczyć swoją przyjaciółkę i zwrócić jej psa, dlatego odważnie zmierza pod granicę podzielonego kraju.
