1943. The affair between Anna, unhappily married to wheelchair-bound Pino, and deserter Franco unfolds in foggy Ferrara, intertwining with the power struggle taking place within local Fascist ranks that culminates in a massacre of civilians, including Franco's father – Pino sees it all from his window, but will he tell anyone?

Ferrare, 1943. Épouse d'un pharmacien paralytique, Anna Barilari retrouve un ancien ami, déserteur. Celui-ci est le fils d'un avocat qui va être abattu, ainsi qu'une dizaine d'autres notables de la ville, à l'aube du 16 décembre 1943 par des squadristi fascistes de Vénétie. Ce règlement de comptes entre factions mussoliniennes sera camouflé en attentat commis par la Résistance. Des années plus tard, le compagnon d'Anna, père de famille riche, vivant désormais à l'étranger, revient avec sa famille à Ferrare pour y passer des vacances. Il rencontre dans un café l'assassin de son père, parlant de football avec d'autres clients. Les deux hommes se serrent la main. Sans amertume et sans rancune apparentes, ils n'évoquent pas une seule fois le terrible événement d'autrefois.

Siamo nell'autunno del 1943, a Ferrara. Il fascista Aretusi fa assassinare il moderato console Bolognesi, accusa gli antifascisti e conduce poi la rappresaglia: undici fucilati sotto la casa del farmacista Barillari, tra cui il padre dell'amante di Anna, moglie di Barillari. Dopo l'eccidio, Anna lascia Ferrara e il suo amante se ne va in Svizzera. Nell'estate del 1960 quest'ultimo torna in città e incontra Aretusi, che gli fa i suoi complimenti: i due si stringono la mano.

Италия, осень 1943 года. Молодая симпатичная женщина Анна работает кассиром в аптеке города Феррара, принадлежащей её мужу Пино Барилари. Личная жизнь у Анны отсутствует, так как фактически она выполняет функцию сиделки при своём супруге-инвалиде. В неё влюблён коллега по работе, но женщина не обращает на аптекаря никакого внимания. Однажды Анна решает пойти в кино. Показ фильма прерывается сиренами, извещающими о воздушной тревоге. Вспыхивает свет и Анна видит среди зрителей Франко, своего давнего знакомого, с которым она не общалась уже много лет.
