该片故事取材于真人真事。这一故事曾被法国两位电影者先后采用过。一是青年导演克里斯纳·李宾斯卡于1974年拍过影片《我，比埃尔·李维尔》，一是雷纳·阿里奥1976年拍成的本片。1935年，在法国南部的诺曼地，发生了一场异常轰动的谋杀案。青年农民比埃尔·李维尔先后杀死了他的母亲，姊姊和弟弟。如此残忍无道的谋杀自己的亲人，到底是为什么？这引起了当局的特大关注，派遣警方进行调查和研究。对比埃尔·李维尔进行耐心的交谈。根据他在监中的陈述，他杀死三人的原因是母亲和姊姊仇恨她的父亲，而他本人却十分爱他。至于杀死其弟弟的原因，是“免得父亲感到遗憾。”事发被捕后，法医认为他精神有病。李维尔被判无期徒刑。但是他在狱中自杀身亡。留下了自己的遗书，遗书的开头是这样写道的：“我，比埃尔·李维尔……”

Based on documents compiled by leading French philosopher Michel Foucault, this unique and original film charts the gruesome events which took place in a Normandy village in 1835, when a young man, Pierre Rivière, murdered his mother, sister and brother before fleeing to the countryside. With a cast made up of real-life villagers from the area where the events took place, the detailed re-enactments and careful attention to the gestures of their ancestors serve to create an intense and sometimes disturbing atmosphere of hyper-realism. Details of the crime and of the trial that followed are told from varied perspectives, including the written confession of Pierre himself, and form a rich and complex narrative that interrogates the concepts of “truth” and “history”.

Le 3 juin 1835, Pierre Rivière, un jeune paysan normand de vingt ans, égorge à coups de serpe sa mère, sa sœur Victoire et son jeune frère Jules. Il prend la fuite et erre plusieurs semaines dans les bois avant de se faire arrêter. A peine emprisonné, le meurtrier, que la plupart des témoins décriront comme un garçon au comportement étrange, voire sous les traits d'un idiot, entreprend la rédaction d'un épais mémoire, texte d'une stupéfiante beauté, véritable autobiographie dans laquelle il expose les raisons qui l'on conduit à son geste : délivrer son père des " peines et afflictions " que lui faisait subir son épouse depuis le premier jour de leur mariage... Criminel monstrueux ou " pauvre " fou ? Le débat opposera longtemps magistrats et psychiatres.

A film tanúk, rokonok és a család ismerőseinek vallomása alapján rajzolja meg a szörnyű gyilkosság hátterét. Egy magasabb síkon halál, gyilkosság, költészet, hatalom és tudás kérdései sűrűsödnek össze egy különös történetben...
