Vicky Barton and her brother Johnny travel from Naples to visit the 1889 Paris Exhibition. They both sleep in seperate rooms in their hotel. When the she gets up in the morning she finds her brother and his room have disappeared and no one will even acknowledge that he was ever there. Now Vicky must find out what exactly happened to her brother.

In viaggio a Parigi col fratello John, Vittoria Barton si sveglia nella sua stanza d'albergo, che è la n.17, e scopre che la n.19, in cui dormiva il fratello, non esiste più. Dopo svariate ricerche viene a sapere che John era stato colpito dalla peste e che le autorità l'avevano trasferito in ospedale e quindi avevano murato la sua stanza cercando di mettere a tacere l'accaduto.

Dos hermanos ingleses (David Tomlison y Jean Simmons) visitan París con motivo de la Exposición Universal de 1889. Después de instalarse en un lujoso hotel, por la noche van al Moulin Rouge, donde ella pasa una agradable velada, pero él siente un enorme malestar. A la mañana siguiente, ella comprueba estupefacta que tanto su hermano como la habitación que ocupaba han desaparecido. Sin embargo, en el hotel todos le aseguran que ella llegó sola. Nadie cree en sus palabras, excepto un joven (Bogarde) a quien el desaparecido había prestado cincuenta francos la noche anterior.
