In Paris in the early 1960s, Ronald is a son of a good family, with a carefree, pleasure-oriented life. He is one of the leading figures in the small world of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Following a trivial parking incident, he meets Arthur, a young man with a straight face who hurts his pride. It is at this moment that Ambroisine, a beautiful young woman, appears... she will be the instrument of Ronald's revenge.

Ronald est un jeune riche oisif, alors qu'il est garé devant Le Flore, une bande de jeunes gens dirigée par Arthur, un jeune bourgeois, déplace sa voiture pour y mettre la leur. De retour Ronald est vexé d'être la risé de la terrasse du café. Il part en en élaborant sa vengeance sous la forme d'un jeu sadique. Ambroisine, aux amours volages, en sera l'instrument : Arthur en tombera follement amoureux, mais Ronald sera le chef d'orchestre pas toujours occulte de cette relation.

Per vendicarsi di Arthur, Ronald fa in modo che l'amico si innamori di Ambrosine, per poi sottrargliela poco prima del matrimonio. Tempo dopo, Arthur incontra Ambrosine e, vedendola trasformata in una signora borghese, capisce di non esserne più innamorato.

La película refleja la vida relajada y disoluta de unos jóvenes burgueses parisinos ("godelureaux" significa en español "petimetres"). Todo comienza cuando Ronald (Jean-Claude Brialy) quiere vengarse de Arthur (Charles Belmont) por un encontronazo que ha tenido con su pandilla en el café Le Flore. Para ello se servirá de la bella Ambroisine (Bernadette Lafont).
