There have been a boatload of movies made focusing on the Marquis de Sade's novel "Justine". Some trying to be a bit respectable, others without scruple merely going for the pornographic angle. Jess Franco's 1968 (when it was filmed) "Justine" falling into the former category.

You've got Klaus Kinski as the Marquis, writing his tale from prison, in a role completely devoid of dialogue. And Kinski looks so young, not as most of us here probably remember him, as an old man playing creepy roles (he was 42 at this time, but looks as if he could've been ten years younger).

And there is Jack Palance, who is perhaps the craziest person in a long list of demented characters (both male and female) in this movie, as the completely hedonistic sadist ruling a debouched monastery of deviants.

And the pretty actress playing the unfortunate target of everyone's lust, Romina Power as Justine (Romina being the daughter of Tyrone Power in real life).

By today's standards, the female nudity is tame, in most instances only fleeting, and there does appear to have been an effort on the part of Jess Franco to be a bit circumspect when it came to Romina Power, not showing her genitalia, and again, not lingering for too long when it came to showing the rest of her. Power was very young at this time-- only 17 --and to Franco's credit, I've read that he wished for an older actress for this very questionable role, but was more or less forced to hire her by an outside financer of the movie, which had a larger budget than Franco had ever previously had. Franco also did not have any scenes requiring Power's character to simulate intercourse. There is much torture of her character in this movie-- forced acupuncture, hot wax, branding, etc. --but she is never raped.

In closing, "Justine" (1968) rises just above the "Eurotrash" label, but barely. There is a lot of attention given to the 1700s French set design and costumes, and the cinematography rises far above what one would normally expect from a movie of this type, but it is, in the end, still a dressed-up soft porn, and for me at least, not worth a re-watch. Into the rubbish it goes.
