北宋宣和年间，皇帝昏庸，民不聊生，怨声载道。当朝太师蔡京乘向皇上贡献"北辰纲"祝寿之机，搜刮民财。清贫的百姓因交不起苛捐杂税，被官府的当差们抓走，不是游街，就是坐牢。住在石碣湖畔的渔民阮小二、阮小五、阮小七兄弟三人，和年迈多病的母亲一起相依为命，过着贫寒的日子，阮小二已经成亲，阮小五已与邻村的姑娘盼青相好。他们对贪官传吏，土豪恶霸的横行霸道深恶痛绝，但是敢怒不敢言。平日里兄弟三人安分守己，从不惹是生非。但还是没有逃避灾难的降临。太平镇的恶霸何壮早就垂涎盼青的美色，唆使爪牙强盼青，激怒了阮氏三兄弟。他们痛打了何壮派来的家丁，救下了盼青和她的祖父。当何壮得知阮氏三兄弟是他20年前杀死的阮老万的后代，盼青是他害死的张大成之女时，心里又是恨又是怕，他便伙同其族兄何涛，设计陷害阮氏兄弟，企图斩草除根。他们将阮小二抓进监牢，残酷折磨，买通牢头，想毒死阮小二。阮小五、阮小七得知后，邀几位见义勇为的好汉，闯进监牢，救出阮小二。阮氏兄弟会同当地豪杰晁盖、吴用等人劫富救贫，智取了梁中书派人送往京城蔡太师府的"生辰纲"。济州府闻讯大惊，立即派黄炳等人率水陆两军，配合何壮、何涛杀向石碣村，捉拿阮氏兄弟。晁盖、吴用埋伏在途中，大败官兵，杀死了黄炳、何涛和何壮，为百姓除了害。激战后，阮氏三兄弟随着晁盖、吴用等人奔上了梁山，投身到"替天行道"的义军行列中。
