Aristide Tromboni e la sua approssimativa compagnia d'attori sono a caccia di scritture e soprattutto di cibo. In un paesino di campagna conoscono l'autore di un delirante dramma storico 'Il ratto delle Sabine', ansioso di mettere in scena la sua opera. Tromboni e i suoi attori, alla spasmodica ricerca di qualche guadagno per la sopravvivenza, accettano di mettere in scena il dramma.
