Het verhaal speelt ergens op het Spaanse platteland in de jaren '60. Paco en zijn vrouw Régula zijn erg arm. Ze werken als leenboeren voor een rijke landeigenaar. Hun kinderen kunnen niet naar school, omdat de baas hun werk 'niet kan missen'.
