Discuss Retribution

The synopsis for 'Retribution' sounds like that movie where a bus had to speed around the city keeping a speed over 50 and if its' speed dropped it would explode. I think that movie was called "The bus that couldn't slow down". Even though this movie sounds similar it is actually closer to "Phonebooth" with Colin Farrell except it is worse. Much worse. Even though Matthew Modine is a B-lister and a has been at best these days it is obvious they aren't going to hire him for this movie for a role that takes two minutes so you know from the get go he is the evil bad guy. His masterplan to get money is just silly and seems like the absolute dumbest way to go about it. This genius brags how he has taken everything into account except he doesn't think it is a bad idea to sit in that that has been rigged to blow nor does he think it might be a bad idea to sit in the doorless car that every police in the city is looking for and leisurely debate his evil plan.

I keep finding US films that are remakes of European films (and very often the original ones are better). But what is the need to spend money and time on remaking movies that have already been made? What is this craze that Americans have to have a claim to remake other people's stuff? Lack of ideas? Conceit?
