唐僧师徒四人赶奔西天，渐觉热气蒸人。问及乡里，才知此地唤做火焰山，无春无秋，四季皆热，山周围八百里火焰。受阻于火焰山，孙悟空、猪八戒到翠屏山芭蕉洞找铁扇公主公主借灭火的芭蕉扇，铁扇公主不肯借予。孙悟空变只小虫钻进铁扇公主腹内大闹，结果拿到手的是一把假扇子。猪八戒又化作牛魔王的模样从铁扇公主手中骗到真扇。牛魔王这时正在跟狐狸精寻欢作乐，听到扇子被抢走了，赶紧回到家中，接着又化作孙悟空的模样从猪八戒手中骗回扇子。影片结尾，悟空和八戒，以及乡亲们联手打败了牛魔王，终得宝扇，扇灭火焰山的烈火，登上取经的路程。影片中的牛魔王其实“日本鬼子”的影射，正值抗战时期，万氏兄弟想借此片鼓舞全国人民的抗战热情。 　　本片是中国第一部长篇有声立体卡通（动画电影），手冢治虫也受《铁扇公主》影响，决定从事动画行业。

The story was liberally adapted from a short sequence in the popular Chinese folk tale Journey to the West. Princess Iron Fan is a main character. Specifically, the film focused on the duel between the Monkey King and a vengeful princess, whose fan is desperately needed to quench the flames that surround a peasant village.

La storia è tratta da un episodio di Viaggio in Oriente, romanzo tradizionale cinese che narra dei viaggi del monaco Xuanzang alla volta dell'India per recuperare preziosi testi buddisti. Per oltrepassare una montagna di fuoco che minaccia un villaggio contadino, il monaco e i suoi discepoli, tra cui il Re Scimmia, si devono impadronire del ventaglio di ferro custodito dalla principessa sposa del Re-Bufalo.
